Gordon
Ramsay is part restaurant empire-builder, part celebrity, and part
sublimely talented chef, Gordon Ramsay is a truly global star in the
cooking world. Gordon is
absolutely a love him or hate him chef, he's flamboyant, opinionated and a
perfectionist in his kitchens; woe betide any slackers that fall under his
gaze; which means his creative output in the kitchen, on Television and in
his books is truly outstanding!
And it
all could have been so different. As a teenager Gordon Ramsay was on the
books of Glasgow Rangers FC, but injury put pay to his chances of a
professional career. So, imbued with an ambition never to fail again, he
switched his attention to cooking. And just as well for us!
Gordon's
stint as the personal chef of an Australian TV chief was the prelude to
Gordon Ramsay's first big break, taking over as part-owner of Aubergine in
London. Within three years he had been awarded two Michelin stars. It
wasn't to last. After a bust-up with the restaurant's backers, Gordon left
and took all his staff with him to his new venture in Chelsea, Gordon
Ramsay. It became a huge critical success, earning three Michelin stars.
Gordon Ramsay now has restaurants in the
Connaught, Claridge's, Mayfair (Pétrus), and Dubai (Verre) and eyes on
many more sites. You can read
reviews of Gordon Ramsay's restaurants
here and book your own special place to dine at his tables.
All this might not have made Gordon
Ramsay the celebrity he is; had it not been for his legendary temper which
has made him a favourite with TV programme makers. Most recently, he has
been the star of two much-talked-about series, Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares
and
Hell's Kitchen.
Never mind the b*****ks, here are the true gems that
place Gordon Ramsay at the apogee of contemporary British cuisine. In
Kitchen Heaven, Gordon's a man with a mission: to give back to the
industry that has given him so much. And if he can impose his excellence
into our home kitchens, so much the better. His confident and sometimes
forceful character define the gregarious style of his cooking so the
finesse and elegance of this book will surprise many.
His beautifully illustrated book includes many of the
recipes he uses in his TV series, Kitchen Nightmares, to replace
tired and misguided fancy food with hearty fare focused more on local
produce and fresh, good-quality ingredients simply presented. Don't be
intimidated by Ramsay's reputation for three Michelin star perfection. The
man whose previous book, Gordon Ramsay's Just Desserts, includes a
recipe for a roasted rhubarb and apple crumble (an easy and warming
comfort pudding), is surprisingly accessible as a creator of cookbooks for
anyone's kitchen. He is a master of great classics such as bouillabaisse,
fish pie, Caesar salad and a stuffed loin of roast suckling pig with
crispy crackling that you'll be calling your mum about.
